In Short:
Data released by the Brazilian Sugarcane Industry Association (Unica) on Wednesday revealed a significantly higher volume of sugarcane crushing in Brazil in the first half of March compared to the same period last year, driven by an increase in the number of operational mills.
Mills in the center-south, the country's main sugar-producing region, processed 2.22 million tons of cane during the period, a 267% increase from the previous year. Unica reported that 40 mills were in operation during this period, compared to 23 in 2023.
Although this crushing volume is still relatively low compared to peak months during the harvest in the middle of the year, it indicates early preparation for Brazil's 2024/25 sugar season, which officially begins in April.
